Demand Response Flexibility is a Practical Solution for Power Resilience

The volatility of the weather and the intermittency of renewable energies have brought real challenges to energy systems. Grid failure and crashing incidents are likely to continue and occur more often. Romany Webb, a researcher at Columbia University’s Sabin Center for Climate Change, said, “The reality is the electricity system is old, and a lot of the infrastructure was built before we started thinking about climate change. It’s not designed to withstand the impacts of climate change.

Natural Gas Generators – 10kW-1000kW

Longer Runtimes and Cleaner Fuel

Natural gas is becoming the preferred solution in many applications as it provides much longer runtimes, the permitting is more manageable, and units with natural gas have 90% fewer emissions compared to diesel generators. In addition, there is virtually no maintenance associated with natural gas generators, while diesel fuel requires conditioning annually.

While diesel has been the traditional fuel choice, many companies interested in standby power generation are considering their carbon footprints and taking steps to become more eco-friendly. WPI offers generators that run on natural gas, which has significantly reduced emissions compared to diesel.

Diesel engines also emit more nitrogen oxide and particulate matter than similar spark-ignited units, which has led to increased scrutiny from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Intense emission level regulations and aggressive tier changes from the EPA could eventually tax diesel engines more due to their higher carbon dioxide emissions.

In addition, the high level of emissions produced by diesel gensets may increase the difficulty in procuring an air-quality permit. Obtaining an air-quality permit for natural gas units is easier because they have fewer harmful emissions. For companies emphasizing the core value of “being green,” natural gas is the best fuel choice in most situations.

Natural gas is one of the cleanest fossil fuels to use. Emissions of sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas) are considerably lower when compared to diesel fuel. Another advantage is that more AHJs(?) recognize natural gas generators as sole off-site fuel choices because these generators rely on a strong underground pipeline network rarely impacted by weather.

Diesel is a proven and reliable solution, the standard in the industry, with a higher power density and faster start-up than natural gas. However, natural gas generators can meet the <:10 minimum startup time required for emergency power supply systems. Once started, the reliability and performance of diesel, natural gas, and bi-fuel generators are equivalent.

These units can also be paralleled together for redundancy and to configure larger kW nodes. This can be accomplished with Generac’s onboard self-paralleling control platform.

Configure Nodes for industrial Natural Gas GenSets:

35kW, 40kW, 50kW, 60kW, 70kW, 80kW, 100kW, 130kW, 150kW, 175kW, 200kW, 230kW, 250kW, 275kW, 300kW, 350kW, 400kW, 450kW, 500kW, 625kW, 750kW and 1000kW

Diesel Generators –35kW-2000kW

Diesel-fueled generators are the workhorses of the industry. They can be efficient for high kW applications and facilities where code requirements (NEC 700 and NFPA 110) call for on-site fuel storage, like hospitals and 911 call centers. They can also provide backup power in remote areas where businesses cannot access the natural gas supply.

WPI specifies diesel engines proven in real-world applications under adverse conditions to provide the best possible diesel-fueled solutions. They are designed for:

  • Easy maintenance
  • Extreme endurance
  • Dirty fuel tolerance
Diesel engines also provide the response, power, and longevity required for many applications. They are also EPA-compliant from the Generac factory, providing a single stop for all your generator support.

Diesel engines have some weaknesses. Diesel fuel is expensive, has a large carbon footprint, and needs to be conditioned annually. In addition, fuel deliveries can be difficult during bad weather or disasters. As a result, many companies are now considering natural gas or bi-fuel generators as options, either as an alternative or as part of an integrated paralleling situation where both diesel and gaseous generators are combined.

Generac and WPI’s engineering team work together to design and optimize our offering to your needs under a wide range of adverse conditions.

  • World-class diesel generators from WPI and Generac are backed by 24×7 support, and a warranty provides our customers with a robust power generation solution.
  • Diesel-fueled generators provide business owners with an efficient fueling option for large backup power applications.
  • Extensive power range for single generators, ranging from 10kW to 2,000kW units—integrated paralleling controls to meet facility MW requirements.
  • Configured Product Nodes:
10kW, 15kW, 20kW, 25kW, 30kW, 35kW, 40kW, 50kW, 60kW, 70kW, 80kW, 100kW, 130kW, 150kW, 175kW, 200kW, 230kW, 250kW, 275kW, 300kW, 350kW, 400kW, 450kW, 500kW, 623kW, 750kW, 1000kW, 1250kW, 1500kW and 2000kW

Bi-Fuel Generators –500kW-600kW

WPI offers BI-FUEL™ generators that combine diesel fuel’s power with natural gas’s longevity. They meet the NEC and NFPA code requirements for on-site fuel storage while providing the reliability of natural gas flow during a crisis or weather event. If natural gas is unavailable, the generator can run on diesel fuel. Generac BI-FUEL™ generators are the only EPA-compliant generators straight from the factory.

  • Generac Bi-Fuel generators start on diesel fuel and add natural gas as load is applied until the unit runs primarily on natural gas.
  • Unlike other bi-fuel solutions, Generac BI-FUEL™ generators are fully integrated, meaning every fuel train component, sensor, and the actuator is specifically designed, engineered, and factory-tested to work together.
  • Generac Bi-Fuel generators have the added benefit of being EPA compliant from the factory – the only bi-fuel system on the market to make such a claim.
  • These units can also be paralleled together for redundancy and to configure larger kW nodes. This can be accomplished with Generac's onboard self-paralleling control platform.
